Calligraphy – not just for old folks

A tip if you are ever planning on portraying a Chinese emperor: make sure your facial hair is firmly attached to your face prior to appearing in public!

We did more calligraphy today than we’ve done in the previous 10 years of Chinese Family Camp – perhaps more!  We started with a lecture about Chinese calligraphy from Grandma Flora Lee, and, in addition, received a ROUSING pep talk about  Planning – Thinking – Acting as a way to be successful in calligraphy and life. Who knew putting an inkbrush to paper had such lessons? The kids worked on tracing the characters from the still hipTang dynasty poem: “Thoughts on a Moonlit Night” by Li Bai.

At lunch, the kids experimented with a dessert creation (probably recreated from the Sui Dynasty) of two chocolate chip cookies sandwiching a layer of chocolate pudding.  Camp Director Wang was awarded two of these delicacies and pronounced them “pretty good!”

In respect for the ridiculous high heat, Uncle Joe Lee cancelled the kickball game. Instead, we competed in the field of culinary sports by making pot-stickers. Roughly 500 of them. It was a hit – many campers made a variety of shapes and sizes of pot stickers, some of which may actually survive the ritual boiling in an edible form.

This is Allen Yang, signing off.
